The Puuc Route is a group of several Maya archaeological sites: Uxmal, Kabah, Sayil, Xlapak, Labná, Oxkintok, Grutas de Calcehtok and Grutas de Loltún. It is located 80 kilometers south of Merida, Yucatan.

Puuc means hill or mountain, which translates something like “Route of the hills”, because of the mounds and elevations where the archaeological sites were settled.

Uxmal

The most famous city on the Puuc Route, Uxmal, is known for its impressive structures and ornate architecture. Oxkintok

It is located in Maxcanu and is the oldest Mayan settlement on record, belonging to the Puuc route. What is known so far of this archaeological site is divided into 3 large sections: Ah Dzib, Ah Canul and Ah May.

Curiously, it is one of the 3 Maya cities known so far to have a Tza tun tzat (place to get lost or lost), a kind of Maya labyrinth very rare to find and that, according to their beliefs, connects with the underworld.

The Calcehtok Caves

The Calcehtok Caves have an extension of 5 kilometers and vaults of up to 30 meters where you can appreciate stalactites and stalagmites among various limestone forms, which make a complicated system of tunnels and passages.
